Dizzy Days are Over with Vestibular Therapy

Imagine you’re walking through a forest, soaking in the peacefulness all around you – the rustling leaves, the birdsong. Then, out of nowhere, you start feeling dizzy, like the trees are swaying even though they’re not. It’s like nature playing a trick on you. Have you ever experienced this?

Vertigo vs. Dizziness

Understanding the difference between general dizziness and vertigo can be really helpful. When you’re dizzy, you might feel lightheaded or like you’re about to lose your balance. It’s that feeling when everything seems a bit off-kilter. On the other hand, vertigo is more intense – it’s like being on a roller coaster where the world around you spins or tilts, even though you’re standing still. It can be disorientating, especially when you’re just trying to enjoy a calm moment.

Is There A Treatment For Vertigo And Dizziness?

Vestibular therapy is a hand-on approach aiming at easing symptoms of dizziness, vertigo, and imbalance. These systems often stem from inner ear problems or can also occur after a concussion, or mild traumatic brain injury. One common inner ear problem is called Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), where tiny calcium carbonate crystals shift out of place and cause intense spinning sensations with certain movements. Luckily, our physiotherapist, Elia, specializes in vestibular therapy and is trained in specific physical repositioning maneuvers to effectively reposition these crystals to relieve symptoms of vertigo, dizziness and imbalance.

Symptoms of dizziness and imbalance can also be due to decreased or increased function of the balance organs or nerves of the inner ear. This can occur because of infection, disease, aging, medications, or head injury.

Will Vertigo Ever Go Away?

Vertigo can come back after vestibular therapy, with about a 50% chance of returning within five years.

Advice From Elia, Physiotherapy

Many people attempt to treat themselves, and while some YouTube treatments may seem correct, they often don’t know which side or canal of the ear to focus on. This can worsen the person's symptoms rather than improve them.

If you’re experiencing vertigo, dizziness or imbalance consider vestibular therapy with Elia to ease your symptoms and bring stability back to your life.
